2021 is the 23rd anniversary of the Might and Power Race Day and since its inception has raised over $6.1 million in funding. These funds have provided vital therapy, respite services and supported a number of other programs for children living with cerebral palsy and their families.

All funds raised from the 2021 Might and Power Race Day will go towards research and creating awareness of cytomegalovirus (CMV), a known cause of cerebral palsy. CMV is a common herpesvirus that circulates widely in the community. If CMV is passed from mother to baby during pregnancy, the virus can cause damage to the baby’s developing brain.

Pregnant women with young children are at increased risk of CMV, with toddlers and preschoolers prone to catching and transmitting the virus to their mothers.

Every year in Australia around 2000 babies are born with CMV, of these 400 will go on to have long-term disabilities including deafness, epilepsy, intellectual impairment and cerebral palsy.

There are simple hygiene strategies that can reduce the risk of infection in pregnancy, however most women have never heard of CMV. Concerningly, Australian research has found that less than 10% of maternity health professionals routinely discuss CMV with women in their care. This is why we need urgent funding to raise awareness of CMV and these important CMV prevention strategies.

Your support of the Might And Power Race Day and Cerebral Palsy Alliance will help us create awareness into CMV and fund research to prevent cerebral palsy.

The winner will be drawn at 4.00pm on Saturday 4 September 2021 at the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Might And Power Race Day, Royal Randwick Racecourse.

The winner will be notified within 7 days of the draw.

Good luck!
